Choosing a home charger

Most home chargers do the same basic job: they charge the car much faster than a three-pin plug and can be scheduled for cheaper overnight rates. The differences are in the extras. If you have solar panels, or plan to, a charger with a solar surplus mode is worth considering, because it can put power into the car that would otherwise be exported for a few pence.

If you have a battery too, the charger and battery need to be set up to work together, so the battery isn’t emptied into the car when you would rather keep it for the house.

Solar and an electric car in Derby

PVGIS gives a south-facing Derby roof about 979 kWh a year per kWp, but most of that arrives between spring and early autumn (PVGIS). In summer a solar-aware charger can cover a good share of a typical commute if the car is at home in the day. In winter it will do much less, and overnight charging on a cheaper tariff does most of the work. Can I charge my electric car from solar panels? works through the numbers.

Grants

The government’s electric vehicle chargepoint grant is for people who rent their home, or who own and live in a flat, and who have private off-street parking. It pays 75% of the cost of buying and installing a charger, up to £500 (GOV.UK). Homeowners in houses are not eligible for this grant. It has to be claimed through an installer authorised for the scheme, so ask about that when you get quotes.

What it costs in Derby

Questions

EV Charger Installation: common questions

How much does EV charger installation cost in Derby?

Checkatrade puts EV charger installation in Derby at £651 to £1,014, with £805 as the average. A longer cable run, a consumer unit upgrade or a charger with solar features can add to that. You get a written price first.

Is there a grant for an EV charger?

There is if you rent your home or own and live in a flat and have private off-street parking. The government's chargepoint grant covers 75% of the cost, up to £500, through an installer authorised for the scheme. GOV.UK has the eligibility rules.

Can I charge my car from my solar panels?

Yes, with a charger that has a solar or surplus mode. It watches what your panels are exporting and diverts that power to the car. How much you get depends on the season and when the car is at home. The solar EV charging guide gives the figures.

Do I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?

Not always. Many newer consumer units have room for the charger's circuit. Older units, or ones without space or suitable protection, may need upgrading. A photo of yours lets us tell you before the visit.

Do you cover my area?

We are based at 219 Burton Rd, Derby DE23, and cover Derby, including Belper, Matlock, Burton upon Trent and Long Eaton, plus Swadlincote, Chesterfield, Ilkeston, Ashbourne, Ripley, Heanor, Alfreton and Duffield. Lines are open Monday to Sunday, 9am to 7pm. Call 01332 919162 with your postcode and we will confirm. All areas we cover.

Can I call outside opening hours?

Lines are open every day from 9am to 7pm. If a panel, cable or inverter is smoking, sparking or smells of burning, stay clear of it and ring 999. A system that has simply stopped or is making less than usual is not an emergency, and a call the next morning is fine.
